10 movies recommended for designers
As a designer, I always feel that our movie-viewing tastes are different from ordinary people, not because we are special, but because our standards for evaluating images are different. We pay more attention to visual expression and element organization than ordinary people. After a long talk all night with a friend who is studying art, I discovered that there are several movies we like and must be included in each designer's viewing list. I decided to list 10 movies that you, as a designer, should not miss.
1. A Scanner Darkly
Movies that use dynamic masks can trace images into animations. There is a software developed by Bob Sabiston called Rotoshop that can achieve this function. The movie tells the story of the near future, when many people are addicted to drugs and police surveillance is everywhere. The cast includes Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr.
2. Thousands of Spirited Away
Personally, I am a fan of Japanese culture, so it is very difficult to choose one among the many Japanese films. I chose Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away; the beautiful movie is accompanied by amazing character designs and scenes, and I believe many designers also love these details.
3.Helvetica
If you did a survey and asked designers about the best typefaces of all time, I would bet Helvetica is among the best. This documentary should be seen by every designer. Directed by Gary Hustiwit, this documentary takes you on a journey through Helvetica's history and attempts to study how Helvetica changed the world through its own ideas. The documentary interviewed some well-known designers Massimo Vignelli and David Carson.
4. Design aspects
One of Gary Hutswit's design trilogy (the other two are "Legendary Font" and "Urbanization". The reason why urbanization is not included in this list is that it mainly talks about the direction of architecture) The design aspects mainly talk about the design behind everyday objects and designers, mainly industrial design. Including interviews with designers such as naoto Fukawas and Karim Rashid.
5. Talent outside the gallery
If Helvetica is the font that all designers like, then the mysterious Banksy may be the idol of all designers and artists. Some people may say that the film is a "pseudo-documentary", but the film was confirmed by Banksy himself. The filmmaker, Mr. Brainwasher, whose real name is Thierry Guetta, initially wanted to make a film about street art, but failed. Banksy suggested he try doodling and took over his movie material. This suggestion led to the new graffiti master brainwashing, and this movie about street art.
6. Magic Fantasy Show
I discovered this movie through my friend Mitch. Directed by Terry Gilliam, he dramatizes the bet between a monk and a demon. This is Heath Ledger's last movie. The cast includes Johnny Depp and Jude Law, and the beautiful scenes and exciting storyline make him on this list.
7. Nightmare Before Christmas
How can I leave Tim Burton? A seat-by-frame animation enthusiast, I first came into contact with this style through this movie, so this is almost one of my favorite movies. The original setting used sculpture, and then the film became the first film to be fully converted to 3D effects.
8. scientific sleep
The protagonist Stephane is a young man who cannot distinguish between dream and reality. The film combines the techniques of traditional films with a step-by-step style to produce a wonderful effect. Great movie with details and imagination.
9. Crazy advertising
This 2009 documentary mainly tells the story of the advertising industry in the United States, describing some typical advertising campaign cases such as "I Love NY","Just Do It" and "Got Milk?" Wait, if you are engaged in design in the advertising industry, then this movie must be seen. It reveals the stories and concepts behind many famous advertising promotions.
10. Waltz with Bashir
The best animated movie I have ever seen should be Israeli director Ari Folman waltz with Bashir. The film tells Folman's interviews with comrades, soldiers, and reporters in order to restore his memory as a soldier in the 1982 Lebanon War. Dynamic masking technology is used.
